" for wednesday, september 26, 2012. >>> good morning, everybody. good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. the race for the white house has taken a new turn. less than six weeks before the presidential election president obama is widening his lead over mitt romney. it's estimated 237 are solidly behind president obama or leaning in his direction while 206 votes are in mitt romney's camp. cbs news quinnipiac university "new york times" poll said president obama has gained significant ground over mitt romney in ohio, pennsylvania and florida. we have more on this. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. both are scrambling for support in those potentially make-or-break states. today honing in on ohio. by bus or by plane for mitt romney and paul ryan this election could come down to one state. >> o.h. o.h.! works every time. >> reporter: ohio is one of the key swing states in this election and today romney and president obama will be battling for attention there, but the latest cbs news poll swing states shows romney with some ground to make up. the poll just out this morning has president obama up 1

brown. this morning in afghanistan the taliban is claiming responsibility for a suicide attack that killed at least 14 people, including three nato service members. a suicide bomber riding a motorcycle rammed into a patrol. americans have a large presence there. nato is trying to sort out a weekend attack in afghanistan that left two americans dead. the casualties push the number of u.s. personnel killed in afghanistan to 2,000. the circumstances of saturday's violence remains unclear but a fire fight broke out at a checkpoint in eastern afghanistan. what nato hasn't determined so far was the gun battle a result of an insider attack or a deadly misunderstanding. drew levinson reports. >> reporter: this weekend marked the deadly milestone in afghanistan. 2,000 american soldiers killed since the war began nearly 11 years ago. it happened at a checkpoint in the eastern part of the country. one american soldier, an american contractor and three afghan soldiers were killed in a fire fight. >> the circumstances were somewhat confused but there was a report of insurgent firing taking

'm terrell brown. president obama takes a brief break from the campaign trail today to address the united nations general assembly. but with just six weeks until the election and his foreign policy under attack from the romney campaign, that address will target american voters as well as world leaders. last night here in new york, secretary of state hillary clinton met with egypt's new islamist president mohamed morsi. two weeks ago, demonstrators overran the u.s. embassy in cairo. morsi assured clinton embassy protection was egypt's duty. susan mcginnis has more now from the united nations. >> reporter: in a speech to the u.n. general assembly this morning, president obama is prepared to tell the world the u.s. will do what it must to make sure iran never obtains a nuclear weapon. >> every option available, and that includes the military option, remains on the table. >> reporter: iranian president mahmoud ahmadinejad denies the accusations his country is trying to develop a nuclear weapon. >> translator: let's even imagine we have an atomic weapon. what intelligent person would fight 5,0

'm terrell brown. the message from the israeli prime minister was not new but very clear, iran will be close to developing a nuclear weapon by next summer and it must be stopped. benjamin netanyahu made his case before the u.n. general assembly. iran called netanyahu's charges baseless allegations. after his speech, netanyahu met with u.s. secretary of state hillary clinton. u.s. hopes diplomacy can stop iran. netanyahu argued ultimatums don't lead to war, they prevent them. >> i believe faced with a clear red line iran will back down and this will give more time for sanctions and diplomacy to convince iran to dismantle its nuclear weapons program altogether. >> david martin has more on netanyahu's plea for action. >> reporter: it looked like a cartoon but it was deadly serious. israel's prime minister netanyahu drew the red line that would trigger an attack on iran's nuclear program as clearly as it has ever been drawn. >> a red line should be drawn right here. before -- before iran completes the second stage of nuclear enrichment necessary to make a bomb. >> reporter: that second stage is
